This sculpture by David F. Judy was originally created in ceramic clay at his Tennessee studio. The clay model is the last image shown above. It was then cast in silver at the American Bronze Foundry in Florida. As you can see from the images, the beautiful reflective silver transforms as the lighting and surrounding environment changes. David mined the material for the coal base by hand from the side of a mountain in his native West Virginia, and then carved it into form. Included with the sculpture is a plaque with a written poetic accompaniment that was inspired during the creation of the art. The plaque is removable so text display is optional, depending on the setting and how the art speaks to you.
The image you see here is the artist’s proof of a limited edition run of 8 mounted onto coal and also 8 made for wall mount. Each new mounted sculpture will have a unique coal base, hand-mined specifically for your casting. All pieces are museum quality and will be signed, numbered, and a certificate of authenticity will be included.
When you place an order for this artwork, the process of casting your piece goes into motion. The foundry is contacted and the piece is cast in silver material, using the mold made from the original clay work. A clear protective coating is applied to protect the polished silver surface from oxidation. Once it is ready, David inspects their casting and brings the piece back to the studio. And then, with hammer and chisel in hand, he seeks out the perfect piece of coal for the base. The coal is prepped & sealed, and then the casted sculpture of the Mask Of Defiance is mounted onto it. If a wall mountable sculpture is ordered, it will be made ready to hang.
